I always wanted to study a health science qualification as I felt that it would be a way I could help people, but I didn’t know too much about the different options. I learnt about Occupational Therapy, and once enrolled I loved it!
Despite my relatively good
schooling and the support of my aunt, the jump from school to university was huge – having to make new friends, cook your own food, and fend for yourself, as well as the unexpected financial expenses of leaving home – bedding and other things for residence. Academically, my first year was not my best year due to the adaption needed in all areas. The academic pace was hectic compared to school, as there was always so much to do: lectures, tests, assignments, and study for assessments. My church, pastor, and my aunt were very supportive.
I’ve always been a motivated person – I always wanted to do my best, and so I set myself goals and worked hard to achieve them. I did that throughout high school and university. Occupational Therapy is a tough course mainly because of the huge workload, especially in the final year, where there is a clinical component in addition to the lectures, practical’s, assignments and assessments. I dealt with the pressure through prayer, going to the gym, and setting myself small goals followed by a reward like an ice cream or a trip to the Mall. I am delighted to have completed my degree Cum Laude.
